Price comparison is one of the most common friction points in kids eyewear sourcing. A buyer sends the same brief to three suppliers and receives three different numbers, with no visibility into why. Sometimes the gap reflects genuinely different quality levels; sometimes it reflects two suppliers reading an ambiguous brief in two different ways.

This guide does not quote prices, which vary by specification, quantity, material market, and timing. It explains the cost drivers so buyers can write tighter briefs, compare quotations on a consistent basis, and recognise when a low number is a signal rather than a bargain.

1. Frame Material and Construction

Material is usually the single largest driver of frame cost. Injection-moulded materials such as TR90 and flexible nylon are efficient at volume, while acetate involves more material waste and hand finishing, which shows up in both price and lead time. Silicone and rubberised frames for the youngest age band have their own tooling and process requirements.

Construction adds a second layer. A one-piece hingeless frame costs differently from a frame with metal spring hinges; a two-colour or co-injected frame requires an extra process step compared with a single-colour body. When buyers ask why a "similar looking" frame is more expensive, the answer is often in the hinge, the number of moulding steps, or the finishing process rather than in the visible shape.

2. Lens Specification

Lenses are frequently underestimated in cost planning because buyers describe them loosely. A basic tinted lens, a mirror-coated lens, a polarised lens, and a lens carrying a specific filtering claim with test documentation are four different cost positions.

For optical programmes, lens index, coatings such as anti-reflective or hard coating, and any blue light filtering all stack onto the base cost. For sunglasses, polarisation and mirror or flash coatings are the usual step-ups. Buyers who specify the full lens stack in the enquiry get a quotable number; buyers who write only "UV400" often receive a quote against the supplier's cheapest interpretation, which then changes once the real requirement emerges.

3. Decoration, Colour, and Finishing

Decoration is where kids eyewear differs most from adult programmes. Applied charms, character shapes, printed patterns, soft-touch coatings, and multi-colour temples all add process steps and often add labour rather than material. Novelty shapes may also require their own tooling.

Colour matters in a less obvious way. A standard colour from the supplier's existing range is cheaper than a custom Pantone match, which may require a colour trial, additional material batching, and a higher minimum per colour. Buyers running several custom colours across one style should expect the per-colour minimum, not just the total order quantity, to affect the price.

4. Packaging and Branding

Packaging is a genuine line item, not a rounding error. A poly bag is not the same cost position as a printed box, and a pouch, hang tag, instruction card, barcode label, and branded outer carton each carry their own unit cost and their own minimum order quantity.

Logo application follows the same logic. A printed logo on the temple, a laser-marked logo, and a moulded-in logo differ in both cost and setup. Moulded branding may require tooling modification, which is a one-off cost that only makes sense above a certain volume. Buyers planning private label programmes should price packaging and branding as their own budget line rather than assuming it is absorbed into the frame price.

5. Tooling, Quantity, and the Volume Curve

If a programme requires a new frame shape, tooling is a one-off charge that has to be amortised across the order. The same tooling cost spread over a small first order and a large repeat programme produces very different effective unit prices — which is why the same supplier can quote very differently depending on the quantity discussed.

Beyond tooling, quantity affects cost through setup efficiency, material batching, and colour minimums. This is why buyers are usually better served by asking for a price at two or three quantity levels rather than a single number. A quotation structured as quantity breaks tells the buyer where the meaningful thresholds sit and supports a more realistic first-order decision.

6. Costs That Sit Outside the Frame Price

Several real costs are often excluded from the quoted unit price and should be budgeted separately:

  • Sample and revision charges before bulk production
  • Any market-required testing or documentation the buyer needs
  • Third-party inspection, if the buyer engages one
  • Freight, insurance, duties, and clearance, depending on the agreed Incoterm
  • Tooling or colour trial charges treated as one-off items

None of these are hidden in a problematic sense — they are simply outside the frame price unless the buyer asks for them to be included. Building them into a landed-cost view is what makes competing quotations genuinely comparable.

7. How to Request a Cost Breakdown

Most suppliers will not publish a full internal cost structure, and buyers should not expect one. What is reasonable, and usually productive, is to ask for the price to be expressed against clearly separated components so the buyer can see what is driving the number:

  • Frame price at two or three quantity levels
  • Lens specification priced as a separate line or as a stated step-up
  • Packaging and branding items itemised with their own minimums
  • Any tooling or colour trial charges shown as one-off costs
  • The Incoterm the price is quoted against

Framed this way, a quotation becomes a working document. It also makes it much easier to identify where a competing offer is genuinely cheaper and where it is simply quoting a thinner specification against the same brief.

8. Reading an Unusually Low Quotation

A quotation well below the others is information, not automatically an opportunity. The usual explanations are a lighter lens specification, a simpler hinge or construction, standard rather than custom colour, minimal packaging, or an assumption about quantity that the buyer did not intend.

The productive response is not to reject it but to ask the supplier to confirm the specification line by line against the same brief. In most cases the gap either resolves into a clear specification difference the buyer can decide on, or it does not resolve — and that lack of resolution is itself a useful signal before any order is placed.

Summary: Unit price in kids eyewear is set by frame material and construction, lens specification, decoration and colour, packaging and branding, tooling, and quantity — not by product category alone. Buyers get more comparable quotations by specifying the full lens stack, itemising packaging, asking for two or three quantity breaks, naming the Incoterm, and treating tooling as a one-off. An unusually low number is best treated as a prompt to confirm the specification line by line.
